All graduate students who are enrolled full-time at the University of Chicago are eligible for Graduate Student Housing. As defined in the Student Manual of University Policies and Regulations, full-time status is “accorded to all students enrolled who undertake an academic workload consisting of any combination of courses, work experience, research, or special studies that is considered a full-time workload.”
Full-time graduate students may choose to live alone or with other single University of Chicago graduate students. Alternatively, they may request housing for themselves and their dependents. A dependent is defined as a spouse, a registered domestic partner, and/or dependent children.
Students who have been admitted to full-time graduate programs may request to move in one quarter prior to enrollment. For instance, students who will begin classes in the Fall Quarter may request to move in during the Summer Quarter.
The application form on this page should be used to apply for Graduate Student Housing apartments or the New Graduate Residence Hall.
Single students sharing apartments are housed only in buildings 18, 20, 25, 26, and 28. Please refer to the map for building features and locations.
Online Application Print Application
Housing offers for Graduate Student Housing are made in the order in which the completed applications are received. Placement depends on the date of application, apartment availability, and the requested move-in date. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible after they have been accepted into the University.
Applicants are asked to rank their choices in order of preference (with the highest preference being 1) and we assign them to the highest of their preferences whenever possible.
A housing offer will be emailed to the applicant as early as possible, approximately one month prior to the requested move-in date. Applicants who have applied for a September move in date and have not received a housing offer by the first week of September should contact rshousing@uchicago.edu to determine the status of their application.
The application deposit is refundable.
If you have not signed a lease for an apartment, you may request to withdraw your application and we will refund your deposit. Requests must be made in writing (within one year of the application date) and must include your home mailing address. It takes about two to four weeks to process the refund check.
If you sign a lease for one of our apartments, the deposit is applied to the first month’s rent after you move in.
If you have signed a lease for an apartment and subsequently do not move into University-owned housing, the deposit is applied to the first month's rent and you are held to the terms of the lease.
All leases end August 31. Depending upon your enrollment status, you may qualify for early lease termination.
